Surfing: Sunday, Sunday, December 15, 2002. Vans Triple Crown of Surfing / Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT). The Billabong Pro, Honolua Bay, Maui. Dec 8 -20.

PLEASE NOTE: Layne Beachley (pictured) did not surf in the Billabong Pro Maui today. This image of her was shot on December 7 in the Billabong Pro Maui when she was eliminated by wildcard surfer Julia Chistian from the event.

When rival and compatriot Lynette McKenzie was beaten by South African Heather Clark in the quarter finals of the Billabong Pro today at Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii Beachley had accumulated enough points to re write the surfing history books with her fifth consecutive ASP world title – she eclipsed four times world champion American Lisa Andersen who has four titles to her name.

The Billabong Pro Maui is the final jewel in the Triple Crown of Surfing featuring a trio of world championship surfing events for women on the North Shore of Hawaii.
