Madre de niño albino transformado en “meme” busca crear conciencia sobre esta condición

Patricia Williams es el nombre de una madre que nunca pensó que subir una foto de su bebé albino recién nacido  a las redes sociales, se convertiría en motivo de burlas. 

Y es que la foto de Rockwell,  se convirtió rápidamente en un “meme”, dando pie para que miles de personas se burlaran de su aspecto físico.

Hi everyone. I wanted all of you to know that we are very well aware of this meme that’s been circulating. So many of you have reached out with concern and have even made efforts to get this removed, and we are so in awe of your kindness. • When this was first brought to my attention, I was angry and in shock. I actually alerted FB and then sent a private and public comment to someone who had posted it, asking them to remove it. After having a few friendly convos back and forth, I came to the conclusion that this actually wasn’t as bad as it COULD be. It’s really not even as funny as the own jokes my husband and I have come up with for Rockwell’s little “old man” features. We are just a little stunned as to how widespread this has become. • For now, we are trying our best to keep a sense of humor about it, and in doing so, I’m having a great time responding to some comments. I’ll be posting some of the best ones in my stories if you’d like to follow along. For those of you who have reached out though, we love you. You are living proof that the majority of this world is filled with kind, considerate, and loving people. 🖤

Lo que en un comienzo fue motivo de molestia para los padres de Rockwell, fue transformándose poco a poco en algo positivo, ya que aprovecharon la situación para concientizar sobre esta condición. 

“Los puntos de vista personales eran muy equivocados y se basaban en lo que la gente veía en las películas. Me di cuenta de que tenía una oportunidad única y rara de educar y difundir la conciencia”, explicó Williams, en una entrevista a El Metro.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mamas. I have spent the last 48 hours trying to work on a sweet Mother’s Day post…when all I’ve wanted to do is curl up in to the fetal position and cry…but there is laundry to do, and mouths to feed and little hands that need holding. We have had a really rough past couple of days. My duties as a mother have been tested, defeated, crushed… to show a photo of us as a happy family without struggles just felt dishonest. So I picked this photo to show first. One of me trying to calm down a cranky 2 month old Rockwell. I remember when Gage was at this stage, I was working full time and never getting enough sleep…and thinking these times would be the hardest and if I could just get through to the next stage, we would be alright. And now with baby #4 I’m looking back now and laughing, thinking “This was by far the most easiest stage…because nothing could’ve prepared me for the TEEN stage.” It was easy for me to calm, protect and ease my babies cries… it is not so much with my teen. So while I navigate through all these feelings of failure, I will try my best to remain calm and loving and kind. I will continue to seek guidance and comfort from my husband and family, and all of my trusted friends. I could not get through motherhood without any of you. 🖤 📷 by @jamiearrigo

Fue en este medio británico donde Patricia contó que esta negativa experiencia los motivó a instruir al mundo sobre esta condición, con el objetivo de derribar la idea de que tienen discapacidades mentales. 

“La idea errónea más aterradora es la forma en que son tratados en ciertas partes de África, particularmente en Tanzania, donde muchos de ellos son atacados y/o asesinados por sus partes del cuerpo. Las personas con albinismo son como todos los demás”, dijo Williams.

¿Qué es el albinismo?

La doctora Silvia Castillo de la Clínica Alemana escribió un artículo llamado “La vida en blanco“, donde explica que el albinismo es un trastorno genético que incluye la ausencia del pigmento del cabello, los ojos y la piel.

¿Cuál es su causa?

En el artículo sostiene que existen formas de albinismo aislado que pueden ser oculocutáneos u oculares, y algunos cuadros asociados a otros defectos metabólicos muy infrecuentes.

¿Cuáles son los principales riesgos para una persona albina?
Las complicaciones derivadas de una visión deficiente, la posibilidad de desarrollar cáncer de piel, y ocasionalmente , la aparición de sordera neurosensorial progresiva.
